A highway traffic camera in Montreal got quite the surprise when a snowy owl swooped across the screen.
Quebec Transport Minister Robert Poetin shared shots from the feathered encounter on Twitter, writing, "Magnificent snowy owl captured by road network surveillance cameras on A-40 in West MTL."
According to McGill Bird Observatory Director Barbara Frei, Montreal's own Hedwig was likely looking for a perch while hunting.
“I think they are attracted specifically to the highway because it has open, grassy fields nearby which is perfect for hunting their favourite prey, which is small rodents,” Frei tells CBC. “They like to get a good lay of the land and the high lamp posts or other posts that they can perch on while hunting just suits them perfectly.”
