Kalamazoo, Michigan, restaurant East Egg Campus, near the campus of Western Michigan University, has started a "giving wall" to help provide meals to people in need. Inspired by a trend she noticed at other restaurants, co-owner Tami Rousch decided to implement something similar in her own establishment. The giving wall works by allowing customers to purchase pre-paid hot meals, which are then available at no cost to anyone who requests them.
The giving wall, which began last month, lets anyone experiencing food insecurity get a meal by simply asking for a ticket number from the wall. Rousch says the program aims to help community members in need, including those on social security, unhoused people, and families going through tough times. The program has already seen over 30 meals donated in just two weeks, and customers say it’s easy and meaningful to take part.
Rousch strongly believes in the importance of treating everyone with respect and kindness, regardless of their situation. The giving wall is part of her effort to support the community and ensure that everyone feels valued. Rousch has contacted local organizations to spread the word about the available free meals and she plans to keep the program going as long as customers continue to donate.
