A pair of young Springfield police officers were working a traffic detail in the middle of the afternoon when things took a life and death turn. The mother, who has not been identified, pulled over and jumped out of her car to flag down the officers, Christopher Charles and Luis Rodriguez, to say her baby was choking.

While Rodriguez called and ambulance, Charles quickly used his training to save the choking baby.

“First of all, I am very happy that mom and baby are doing well and healthy,” Mayor Domenic Sarno said in a statement. “Such a beautiful child and loving mother whose quick thinking to pull over after seeing the officers working a road detail, I am so relieved that our brave and dedicated officers were able to offer assistance and utilize their training to save the life of this precious child.
