"Night of the Giving Dead" Helps Kids Get Halloween Costumes

A group of friends in Huntington, West Virginia, run a program that provides Halloween costumes for kids in need. The program is called “Night of the Giving Dead” and for six years it’s been giving new costumes to hundreds of kids who might not otherwise have one. Falon Tooley, who has been volunteering with the organization since it started, says she does it as a way to still enjoy Halloween now that her son is grown. “It is the highlight of the fall for me,” she says.

The group supports four local schools and a foster agency and their goal for this year is to outfit 200 trick-or-treaters with brand new costumes. “We also let the kids pick out exactly what they want to be. So they don’t just get whatever is on the rack,” says organizer Joe Murphy. ”They get to choose their own character, their own hero, their own occupation.”

This year, because of COVID concerns, they aren’t taking costume donations, but anyone who wants to help can make a donation here. A gift of $30 will ensure one more kid will get the Halloween costume they want this year.
