Mother Accused Of Keeping Son Locked Up In Her Apartment For 28 Years

A woman in Sweden was taken into custody for allegedly keeping her 41-year-old son in captivity for the last 28 years. The man was found by a relative who went to check the woman's apartment after she had been admitted to the hospital.

When the relative arrived, the door was unlocked, and she went inside, where she found "urine, dirt and dust" all over the place. When she went into the kitchen, she found the man sitting on blankets and pillows. According to Swedish newspaper Expressen, the man had sores on his legs and had trouble walking. Most of his teeth were missing, and he was slurring his words.

"There was urine, dirt, and dust. It smelled rotten," she told the newspaper. "No one could have cleaned that home for many years."

The woman told the paper that she knew the man's mother was controlling but did not know he had been held in captivity since he was 13-years-old.

"I'm in shock, brokenhearted, but at the same time, relieved. I've been waiting for this day for 20 years because I figured out that she was totally controlling his life, but I never imagined the extent of it," she said. "I'm just thankful that he got help and is going to survive."

The man was taken to the hospital to get treatment.

Authorities took the woman into custody and are holding her on suspicion of unlawful deprivation of liberty and grievous bodily harm.
