Zach Braff Says The Emmys 'Chose' To Exclude Nick Cordero From In Memoriam

Nick Cordero was left out of the 2020 Emmy Awards' In Memoriam tribute and the late star's friend Zach Braff has an explanation for the decision.

In a new statement, Braff spoke out on his late friend, who passed away after a lengthy battle with Coronavirus at 41. "For those wondering: The Emmys chose to leave Nick Cordero out of the memorial montage. I had no idea one had to campaign to get their loved one in. We did. They passed," the Scrubs alum, 45, tweeted on Monday morning (September 21). Cordero had previously starred alongside Braff in Bullets Over Broadway in 2014.

In addition to the revelation, he shared a screen capture of the Television Academy’s statement to the star. "They did want me to pass along this note," the statement read. "Those involved in the In Memoriam selection process are very aware of the sad passing of Mr. Cordero due to coronavirus and we assure [you] that his name has been given every consideration for inclusion. With so many people passing in any given year, we simply cannot ensure any particular individual is included, nor do we release the names of those included prior to the telecast."

Cordero’s passing happened after a 90-day hospitalization, which saw his wife, Amanda Kloots, share update after update via Instagram. After his death, Braff explained that Cordero didn’t have COVID-19 prior to his death. "What COVID did to Nick is what it does to a lot of people, it comes in and wreaks havoc on your body. Then it leaves and you don’t have it anymore, but you're left with what the doctors called 'lungs that look like Swiss cheese,'" he admitted during an episode of his "Fake Doctors, Real Friends” podcast.
