Chicago Passes Grim Milestone

An awful milestone in Chicago, which has now seen more than 600 homicides for the second year in a row.

There had been at least 609 homicides recorded in the city as of early Monday; by this time last year, that number was 711, but the number by this point in years prior was much lower: 443 in 2015 and 400 in 2014.

This is just the third time since 2003 the city has surpassed 600 homicides, the Chicago Tribune reports. Shootings are following the same trend: At least 3,267 people have been shot in the city this year, compared to 3,937 by this point last year but just 2,288 by this point in 2015 and 1,999 by this point in 2014.
